Designing for Health Tech
The Blackghost team developed a highly comfortable belt equipped with an advanced sensor system. Designed for military use, this product helps generals monitor soldiers’ health conditions in real time — preventing heatwaves, fatigue, and other stress-related incidents in the field.
My Role
I collaborated with the team to enhance how health data is presented and experienced across both the web and companion mobile apps. My goal was to make critical information easy to interpret, actionable, and visually coherent under demanding conditions.
Process & Methodology
To understand the needs of our users — military personnel and commanding officers — I began by interviewing members of the client’s team to identify pain points in the existing system. Insights from these sessions revealed that the current interface and alert system were overly technical and difficult to navigate during high-pressure situations.
Using a user-centered design approach, we:
Redesigned the UI to improve clarity and accessibility.
Tested individual user journeys to ensure smooth, reliable interactions.
Iteratively refined prototypes based on user feedback and real-world testing.
Designing for Alerts
The previous alert system relied on technical jargon and inconsistent visuals, which often led to confusion. I gathered feedback from the customer support team and product owners to create an alert system that communicated in the user’s language — clear, contextual, and easy to act upon.
Consistent Colour Coding & UI
Before the redesign, orange was used for multiple alert types, making it difficult to distinguish urgency levels. Working closely with developers, I co-designed a new algorithm-driven colour system to ensure consistency and clarity across all alert types. I also designed all relevant touchpoints, enabling administrators to quickly access detailed information about each soldier’s status.
Outcome
The revamped experience made real-time health monitoring intuitive and reliable — helping military leaders make faster, safer, and more informed decisions in the field.
